I’m a little late in getting this posted but I was able to have Pokerpeaker interview Lucko for his 3rd Mookie title. Peaker is a pro and he does a great job not only with his blog but writing stuff for Pokerworks as well. You can find Lucko’s first profile HERE and his second one HERE.

A big thanks to Pokerpeaker for helping out with this profile.

Probably no poker blogger in our cicles have had as much success lately as Lucko. In fact, he’s won more in tournaments the last two weeks than most of us could hope to win in a decade.

Here’s a few insights from him for his third Mookie title. There are a couple surprises, including the fact that Lucko still considers himself a tight player.

Q: Congrats on your recent run. When you’re on a run like this, what do you think you’re doing right? Is it just a matter of the cards coming your way, or what do you think you’re doing right that helps you win all these major tournaments?

L: I think I have been playing some of the best tournament poker of my life the past few weeks. I have been a lot more focused and motivated than I was. I go through periods where I feel burned out on poker and periods where I have a ton of energy for the game. This is one of the good periods. Running good late in a couple big mtt’s obv helps too tho.

Q: What do you do for a living? Have you considered going pro in poker? If not why not?

L: I do a combination of programming and support. I have a specialized skill that only a few large companies need. I have considered going pro, but never very seriously. In my line of work, if I took a few years off and my skills would get out of date quickly and my marketability would suffer greatly. Playing poker for a living is a very stressful job to have and I think it would take a lot of the fun out of the game. It might change in the future, but I have no plans as of now to play for a living.

Q: I remember you saying that you used to play a pretty tight/aggressive game. When did you start to loosen up, and what helped you form the style you have today? Were there any books you read? Any pros you emulated?

L: What is funny is I still consider my self a tight player. I only play loose when I think the table conditions warrant it. There are definitely some on-line pro’s I have emulated. I used to spend a ton of time on the rail, quietly watching some of the better on-line tournament players. It is an easy/free way to learn about the game. I have read a ton of books, but only a few have been helpful.

Q: How much does your game depend on the cards you get, and how much of it just comes from raw aggression?

L: Most tournaments, it is just trying to play the cards you are dealt better than the rest of the field is. Late in tournaments I have been able to run over some fields with just raw aggression. The win I had at Harrah’s two weeks ago, I think I raised about 85% of the hands that folded to me over the last five hours of the tournament. Almost no one was playing back at me.

Q: Was there a moment when you had a breakthrough using that aggressive style and you knew that it was the right thing to do? How long did it take for you to comfortable switch gears?

L: No breakthroughs, poker doesn’t really work that imo. It is just a process of trying to constantly improve your play. It is not a hard game and I think most people can have good success if they are willing to put in the work. Most people aren’t willing to put in the work tho.

Q: What goals do you have in poker, both live and online?

L: Basically just play as good as I possibly can play. I do plan on winning the WSOP Main Event this year.

Q: How much do the blogger tournaments mean to you? Why do you play in them? What about winning the Mookie?

L: I hate to say it, but blogger tournaments don’t mean very much to me. I am playing them right now mostly because of the bbt and prop bets. Winning the Mookie is kind of cool tho. If it wasn’t for the bbt, the Mookie and Big Game are probably the only blogger tournaments I would play. Oh and the upcoming Sunday Heads Up as well. Check Loretta’s blog for details.

Q: Are they any tougher or easier than the other tournaments you play?

L: Easier. It’s not close.

Q: What’s your favorite online tournament and how often do you play it?

L: The Stars Sunday Million and I play it every chance I get.

Q: How do you think you can improve in the future?

L: I am always trying to work on my game. There are so many resources out there for anyone to get better if they want to. I spend more time on my game than most people would think.

Congrats and thanks again to Lucko and Pokerpeaker for participating in this profile.

Champion: Heffmike

Blog: Donkeys Always Draw

Donkeys Always Draw

Q: What is the background of your online name…Heffmike?

H: So, so boring. My original AOL screenname from college. I wasn’t swift enough to come up with something Net-approved, like pwnedUagain or VaLueCaLL420 or Gobboboy. As a result, I’m stupidly easy to find online, compared to most other bloggers’ quest for anonymity, and I’m not so bigtime that I can get a screenname change, so I’m stuck with heffmike. Woot.

Q: How did you get into poker?

H: Yeah, Moneymaker made it look cool. So did Rounders. I’d played home games at school and with co-workers, but they were with nine billion wild cards for a dime at a time. I think it was late 2004 when I had the time and money available to deposit onto Stars, then Full Tilt, and see what the online pokah was all about. I ran really, really good for over two years, then crashed and burned after the UIGEA passed (complete coincidence, honestly) and am rebuilding back up in 2008.

Q: Do you have any poker related goals and if so what are they?

H: Well, I luckboxed into the WSOP ME in 2006 via Full Tilt satellite, so I did that one. It would be nice to take down a live event someday, even one of those quickie $150 daily tourneys the Borgata runs. Basically, my only goal is to just make good decisions every time I play.

Q: What are key improvements that you’ve seen in your game over the last six months, and what is one priority you have for improving? (Submitted by CC)

H: Recent improvements…. Finally realizing that everyone else does NOT play like you do, so factor that in when analyzing their range and what their lines really mean before making your play…. Down the line I’d really like to get better at deep-stack/cash poker – I’m pretty good with a short to medium tournament stack, but need to figure out how to play better with >100BB when you’ve got room for play on the turn and river.

Q: How would you describe your poker style?

H: Grumpy old man TAG in blogger tourneys. Stupidly LAG in cash games, especially live. Either way, I’m really good at shoving into the nutz., lol.

Q: What would be your first piece of advice for someone wanting to learn to play poker? (Submitted by Maudie)

H: Develop a thick skin. While you are learning, you’ll be surprised how many people call you an idiot. Some of them will be right. You’ll know you’re getting better when you can figure out which ones are right…

Q: What level of static do you get over your poker habit? (Submitted by Drewspop)

H: Some on occasion, The wife plays and loves the game, but not as much as I do, so obviously, there are times where she wants me to do X and I’m getting three-outed instead. I try to be a good hubby the rest of the time, and she hasn’t hurt me yet, so I must be balancing things OK.

Q: What was the first poker blog you read?

H: Same ones as everyone else, Iggy and Dr. Pauly. I still visit them a lot, but nowadays Hoy’s blog is usually a good starting point to the rest of the nine circles….. :-)

Q: Who would be at your 6-handed SNG?

H: The only saving grace of playing live is the conversation and personal interaction.
Chatty tables rock.

“deadmoney” Heffmike - who’s that?
Daniel Negreanu - the ultimate talker, plus maybe he’ll let me taste his lunch and see if his mom can really cook or not
Gavin Smith – gotta have comic relief – must be buzzed before we start, though
Phil Hellmuth - comics need a foil, plus someone should yell at me when I screw up, why not him…
Tony “Bond18” Dunst – writes a great analytical blog, will wear a nice suit and look smooth, also chatty and entertaining.
Kenny Tran – need one Crazy Asian Gambooler to keep things lively, I’m only half, so I don’t count.

Q: Between Nihilism and Masochism, which do you think better describes why you play poker? (Submitted by Iakaris)

H: Marxism: I tend to give chips away to each according to their needs.

Q: What’s the last book you have read?

H: The Replacements: All Over But the Shouting: An Oral History by Jim Walsh
I’m a sucker for anything involving Paul, Bob, Tommy and Chris.

Q: Tell us a little known fact about yourself.

H: I was a college radio DJ for over three years. I almost remember how to work a board.

Q: If the poker blogosphere were to have a Canada-USA team competition with a mixed game tournament format, which poker bloggers would you name to each team (5 players per side)? (Submitted by PirateLawyer)

H: Jeez., I gotta do research?

OK, give me five minutes. I apologize for pissing anyone off in advance.
.
U.S. – Hoyazo, Emptyman, Lucko, Cmitch, Cracknaces.
Canada – Fuel55, PirateLawyer, Schaubs, Katitude, Astin
The U.S. team definitely is grumpier, lol

Heffmike’s question for the next champ…

Q: Beer, tallboy can or bottle? Choose and discuss.

Vegas Booked

We booked our airfare for Las Vegas this past weekend for the weekend of June 6-9th. I was unable to get away from work for the 12-15th plus we had the free rooms at Bellagio for the 6-9th. Hopefully a few more people will be able to make the first weekend so I can at least meet a handful of you.

I’m kinda disappointed there is really no “official” gathering for this summer. Figures though since I’m finally able to make one. No worries though since I’ll still get to meet a few bloggers and I’ll still consider this a completion of one of my goals.

The weekend was near perfect. I got to spend a lot of time with my family especially since it was Mother’s Day. TeenMook spent the night at a friend’s house on Friday night and was to go to Six Flags in San Antonio with a school group. They were playing hide and seek and her friend’s dog chased them around nipping at their heels. Unfortunately the dog caught my daughter’s foot and ripped a nice sized gash (kinda gross) on the top of her foot.

Mrs. Mookie took her to the ER and she ended up getting 6 stitches and had to miss her Six Flags trip. She’s been hobbling around ever since and we had to take her to a pediatric surgeon today because it started to get infected. Big fun.

MunchkinNo poker for me lately live or online. My online account is flush with cash but I haven’t had the time or desire to grind away. My family life has been great lately and most of my time and energy is being spent there. Our little Munchkin is two months old and (knock on wood) has been almost sleeping through the night. She’s been a good baby and is starting to smile and coo. She’s a de-tilting machine…whether it’s poker or life that has me on tilt, I can just pick her up, get a smile and the tilt melts away.

June Blogger Gathering

One of my goals of the last couple of years has been to make a blogger gathering in Vegas. I’ve yet to meet many of you knuckleheads and when Falstaff posted the dates back in April (June 5-9), I didn’t think I would be able to make the trip.

But then something happened…Mrs. Mookie got 3 free nights at Bellagio. She quickly called and they let us have them for the 6-9th. Wheeeee!

Since I don’t run like Lucko, I found out that there would be no blogger tourney this time around. Bummer! Then as the weeks passed by I started hearing that many of you wouldn’t be able to make that weekend.

Over the last couple of weeks it’s become apparent that a lot of you are planning a trip for the following weekend…June 12-15th.

So my question to the masses is who is going to Vegas and when??

Here is what I have found so far, feel free to leave me a note and lemme know when you are going if at all.

Please let me know what everyone is doing and soon! Changing my plans to the 12-15th weekend will be tough as I’m not sure I can take off from work or if Bellagio will let us change our rooms.

The Mookie TONIGHT

The Mookie

Weekend at Mookie's 2When the alarm went off off at 7:30am I moved to push snooze and my whole body ached. It’s tough getting old and the previous day’s golf excursion left its mark on my body. Somehow we all got up and made it on the road to the Lago Vista Golf Club, the location of the 2nd Annual WAM Scramble.

The course was in great condition compared to last year although it was a little chilly to start the day. We had plenty of time to hit some balls on the driving range and practice putting. There are always tons of deer on this course so many of us tried to peg a few on the range. The deer were smart and stayed in the middle of the driving range.

Like last year we had 4 teams signed up for the tournament. Because most of us suck at golf, I didn’t waste time trying to balance the teams equally. Last year JJ, Don and myself played on the same team and tied for first place (winning on the scorecard) so I decided to keep the team intact.

JJ, Don, Mookie

The next team was comprised of Mrs. Mookie, Henry (Big O regular) and Steve.

Steve, Mrs. Mookie, Henry

ScottyMc, CK and Scotty’s buddy Mark made up another team.

Mark, CK, ScottMc

The fourth team had my sister Anna, her boyfriend Steve and Big O regulars Rico and Bern.

Steve, Anna, Rico, Bern

Astin isn’t a golfer but brought out his bad ass camera and drove around taking pictures of the action and surroundings. Most of the pictures on this post are shots he took. I’ll have a link at the bottom of this post to all of his pictures.

We were the last team to tee off and we went to work quickly making birdie on the first hole. The front 9 was no match for our golf skillz and we jumped out to -4 through 9. JJ made it 2 in a row winning the Longest Drive on hole #8.

After grabbing some burgers and beer at the turn we made our way to the 10th tee box. We birdied the hole to move to -5 and we started talking about what we could end up shooting. Last year we won with -4 and we wanted to crush that. So you can imagine what happened the rest of the round. Yep, all pars and a bogey. Doh!

Steve won the Closest to the Pin prize on hole #12 when I couldn’t get inside of his 13 ft. shot on the 180 yd. par 3.

Mrs. Mookie’s team shot +2 while my sister’s team were -1. Scotty and CK’s team brought up the rear shooting +9.

The round took forever due to a couple of slow groups ahead of tourney (although the course tried to blame us at first) so we had to rush home to get setup for the BBQ at the Big O.

Being the bright individual that I am, I completely forgot to put on sunscreen so not only was I exhausted from golf but my arms and face felt like they were on fire.

We made it back to the Big O and quickly showered and changed. There seemed to be a million things to get ready for both the BBQ and poker tournament and luckily I had plenty of help. Rico and Bern took over the grilling duties while I worked with Rocco in getting the poker room setup.

The long round of golf seemed to take its toll on everyone as we were all moving around pretty slow and some people had a tough time staying awake.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Eventually the meat was grilled, people showed up with various side items, desserts and snacks and once again we stuffed our guts.

We took the snacks, dessert and booze upstairs to the poker room. There ended up being 27 players for the $50 “freeze-out” (You could buy back in as a new player if you busted within the first hour). Each player started with 20,000 chips and blinds began at 100/200 increasing every 20 minutes.

It didn’t take long for someone to hit the rail. At table 3 Michael raised preflop and got a couple of callers including MiamiDon. The flop was King high with two spades and Michael led at the flop with Don coming along for the ride. The turn was the Ace of spades and Michael checked while Don bet near the pot. Michael tanked but eventually called. The river paired the board (5) and once again Michael checked and Don went all-in. After tanking for a few minutes, Michael called and mucked his AK after Don showed the 86s. Michael didn’t exercise his option to buy back in and took 27th place.

Over the hour we had two other people bust but they ended up buying back in as a new player. It would be almost an hour and into level 4 before we would lose another player. Sed’s (KngofKngs) cousin John busted in 26th when his Kx lost to Bern’s QQ.

At my table April got coolered when her QQ ran into Rocco’s AA. The flop was all under cards and you could tell she almost folded but eventually called only to be shown the rockets.

Astin was the next to go in 24th when he failed to win a race against Henry. Joel lost a couple of big pots (one to me when I doubled through with KK) and lost the rest of his crumbs to me when I turned a flush with 98h.

Bern joined the growing rail when his baby pair ran into a bigger pair. Henry finished in 21st when his 88 was rivered by AQ. With his elimination we were down to 20 and collapsed to two tables.

ScottyMc moved to my table with a big stack when we collapsed to the final 2 tables when this hand went down. I don’t remember the preflop action but after a QJx all spade flop, Toby, ScottyMc and Steve B got all in. 75s (or something close to that) for Scotty, QJ for Toby and AsX for Steve. The turn was a Q completing a full house for Toby crippling both Steve and Scotty. I don’t remember the hand details but Carol, Steve B., Steve were the next three eliminated.

The Mook (T8) was no good for Mrs. Mookie when it failed to win against Stacey’s A9. She finished in 16th place.

I put a nasty beat on Carter crippling him when my AT sucked out against his AK. Scott R. and Carter were both KO’d by Toby. Rocco finished 13th when he couldn’t suck out with Ax against Sed’s pair.

CK also moved over to my table when we were down to 20 players and she was nursing a shorter stack. With blinds at 3,000/6,000 I made it 18,000 to go with QQ and she jammed her 17,000ish stack with AK. We were off to the races and I flopped a set leaving her only a gutshot to win. Somehow, someway my hand held up and she was out in 12th.

After Megan was knocked out in 11th place by my sister Anna, the remaining 10 players were seated at the final table.

  1. Toby: 178,000 chips
  2. Sed: 73,000 chips
  3. Anna: 63,000 chips
  4. Justin: 55,000 chips
  5. Mookie: 52,000 chips
  6. Stacey: 40,000 chips
  7. JJ: 37,000 chips
  8. Rico: 36,000 chips
  9. MiamiDon: 31,000 chips
  10. Mark: 24,000 chips

Toby Sed Anna Justin Mookie

Stacey JJ Rico MiamiDon Mark

The blinds were already up to 4,000/8,000 so there wasn’t much play left at this point. The first big pot of the final table ended up being 3-way all-in preflop. Mark held AQ while JJ had KQ and Anna AJ. Naturally the board came KQxxx and JJ tripled up leaving Mark out in 10th place and Anna crippled.

JJ kept chipping up by knocking out Don in 9th place a few minutes later. Anna managed to keep doubling up her tiny stack to stay alive but eventually her luck ran out in 8th place.

With the top 6 spots making the money, we immediately went into deal making mode. I thought paying out $50 to 7th place was pointless since it cost $50 to play. In the end we all agreed upon paying 4th-7th $100 each, 3rd $200, 2nd $350 and 1st $550.

By now the blinds had climbed to 6,000/12,000 and I was one of the short stacks with around 50,000. Toby raised in the cutoff to 36,000 and I jammed out of the SB with AQo. Stacey was in the BB and had just a few more chips than me and called. Toby turned over 55 and Stacey held T9o making me a slight favorite. A 9 hit the flop and I got no love on the turn or river and I was out in 7th place. Yea for the save!

I went downstairs to hang out with Mrs. Mookie and some of the other railbirds. Amazingly it would be another 40 minutes until the next player was eliminated. Crazy!

Rico took 6th place and after taking a couple tough beats JJ finished in 5th place. The one time chipleader Toby missed the next money jump finishing 4th. Five minutes later Justin bowed out in 3rd place leaving Stacey and Sed heads up for the title.

They counted down their chips and they each had the same amount. Since it was almost 2AM they decided to chop up the remaining cash netting them $450 each.

Stacey and Sed

A cash game had been running for a couple of hours but I never got to sit in which ended up being one of my regrets for the weekend. The game had a max buy-in of $100 with blinds at .25/.50 and occasional $1 straddle.

A huge thanks to everyone who made it out for the weekend. I hope everyone had as good a time as I did. I’m already looking forward to next year!

Weekend at Mookie's 2The alarm went off early on Friday morning and after placing wake up calls to everyone we eventually made our way to Crystal Falls Golf Club. The golf course is just a few minutes down the road and would have been the site of our WAM Scramble this year but they were already booked with another event.

Meeting us at the course were ScottyMc, Steve and blogger tourney regular Chitwood. The course staff stuck us with a random lady to fill out two groups of 4 players…more like hackers.

We had originally hoped to hit the range and putting green to shake off some of the rust. Unfortunately we spent too much time getting our gear together and had to get to the first tee.

Scotty, Steve, Chitwood and the random lady were the first to tee off.

Scotty had the John Daly vibe working for him, the only thing missing was a cigarette dangling from his mouth. Once they made their way towards the green our group (consisting of me, Mrs. Mookie, Don and CK) took its turn on the tee.

MiamiDon Mookie CK Mrs. Mookie

As you can see from the pictures above, CK was the Michelle Wie of our group. Strangely none of us really parred the first hole. I guess after playing a combined one round in the last year had something to do with that. We were all over the first hole and I must have lost 2 or 3 balls before we made it to the green. Mrs. Mookie’s 7th iron couldn’t take it anymore and the head flew off into the bushes trying to escape. 35 years later we finally arrived at the green and quickly decided to not keep score for the round.

Our group was moving pretty slow and we ended up skipping a green to keep pace. We finally caught up to the first group on the 6th hole.

We made the turn and grabbed some grub and I still couldn’t find the fairway. Finally on about the 14th hole my game (like I have one) started to turn around. A little late but at least I used the same ball for four straight holes.

It started to heat up but luckily for us we were finished with our round before it got too much hotter. It did get hot enough for one of the group to lift their shirt for a quick flash. This picture (NSFW) will make Waffles pretty happy.

We headed back to the Big O for some much needed showers and got all gussied up for a night at the Salt Lick. Right before we were to leave Astin pulled into the driveway. He got the nickel tour and quickly changed. Since the Salt Lick is BYOB we crammed the cooler with beer and hit the road.

The Salt Lick is located in Driftwood AKA a long, damn way from my place. It’s pretty much in the middle of nowhere and I swear I heard dueling banjos playing as we pulled into the Salt Lick parking lot.

April and Scotty joined us and we put our names on the list as we made our way to the patio for some beer and live music. There wasn’t a huge crowd of people waiting to get in but time passed and our buzzer never went off. Eventually I went back up to find out how much longer we would have to wait and was told “Oh, your whole party is here? Go ahead inside and be seated.” Doh!

It didn’t take long for the food to come out since we had settled on the family style setup. All you can eat baby! The food was great and I ate way too much which allows me to say I’ve finally eaten at the Salt Lick. After many pounds of brisket, sausage and ribs were destroyed, we finally quit and made the long journey back to the Big O.

We hit the sack early since Saturday would be a very long day.

Weekend at Mookie's 2After spending the better part of a month prepping my house for the handful of blogger, Thursday finally arrived signifying the start of the Weekend at Mookie’s 2. I emptied the Suburban of the numerous car and booster seats and made my way to the airport. Instead of the original plan of picking up 5 donkeys, the number was reduced to just a couple after some late cancellations.

CK was the first to touch down in Austin followed by MiamiDon a couple hours later. As I pulled the Burb up to the airport curb, I was quite surprised to see that Don’s suitcase was nearly 3x the size of CK’s tiny bag. Who knew Don was a closet metrosexual.

We made the trek northwest and stopped by Don’s Liquor Store to pick up a few bottles of liquid fun. Instead of picking up some Patron, the store employee talked Don into trying some Casa Noble. Bottles of Crown and Tito’s (Austin vodka) completed our order and we were on our way.

We made it to the house and they met Mrs. Mookie and a few of the mini-Mooks. Since they were the first bloggers in for the weekend they got first pick of the rooms at the Big O. After getting settled in and having our first shots of the weekend, we headed to the poker room and played a little Wii bowling to pass the time. My 4 yr. old decided to join us and of course kicked our ass bowling with both hands just to rub it in.

Eventually we got all the kiddos picked up from school and unloaded them at my parent’s house. My mom is so awesome and courageous as she ended up watching our 6 kiddos along with a couple of other grandkids for the entire weekend.

The plan for the night was to get some grub and then head to the ballpark for a Round Rock Express AAA baseball game. Everyone was cool with tex-mex so we met ScottyMc at Chuy’s in Round Rock. I stuffed myself with some excellent enchiladas and washed them down with a couple Dos Equis. I don’t always drink beer, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis. Stay thirsty my friends.

Dinner ran a little longer than we expected so we rolled into the Dell Diamond parking lot a little late for the game. We met Steve (Gilain) at the front gate and got seated as the 2nd inning began. The weather was great and our seats were right behind home plate.

We found out quickly that Thirsty Thursday was half price beer night and not the $1 we were expecting. This didn’t deter us from grabbing a few cold ones while we took in the game.

There was a Trot Nixon sighting (who was playing for the visiting Tucson Sidewinders) along with Lance Niekro (son of Joe Niekro and nephew of Phil Niekro) and Tim Raines Jr sightings.

The Express ended up winning the game 4-1 and we had a great time hanging out. Since we had an early tee time the next morning, we said our goodbyes to Scotty and Steve and headed back to the Big O.

Swamped

I’m back to the grind that is work, missing 3 days has me working too hard to write much today.  I hope to post the first part of the Weekend at Mookie’s 2 recap sometime tomorrow.   Let’s just say the weekend wasn’t turrible.
